Re: Feb 2010 Personal Preps
Wednesday grandson, his wife and great-grandson moved in with us for about a week. Thursday night we opened 8 cans of 12-year-old green chili and had it, fried potatoes, and tortillas for supper. Hmmmmm good! I trust my nose and my eyes and this was perfectly good. Thursday night we used two quart jars of 5-year-old home-canned turkey soup - hmmmnnn good! [Of course it was canned perfectly and properly by us.] We are getting ready to clean out our freezer of kielbasa, smoked sausage, hot sausage, and are going to cut it up in chunks and home-can it. Last year we used up the last of jars of sausage we had canned eight years previously. And yes, we do cook it for 20 minutes before eating.
Saturday afternoon and I just finished carrying in 6 wheelbarrows full of wood - just in case it snows here in sunny, beautiful Wyoming, after all we are considered northern. Dang I'm glad we left Maryland 20 years ago
We did an informal survey today of our firewood and have determined we have enough for two years of supply. However, we have mostly used up our supply of flat wood from cut-up pallets. Because it burns so hot we use it to start fires with. Grandson is going out to cut us about 5 more cords of wood in the Tetons. We're investing in our own log splitter. I've been looking at a 23-ton (pressure) splitter for about $1600.
One last hint if you heat with wood, buy yourself a cross-cut shredder and constantly shred your junk mail, old financial records, cereal boxes, toilet paper tubes, etc. We use it (with our chimney-sweep's blessing) to start fires with. Most of the burning carbon from the paper settles back into the soil, which is recycling to an extent and we do not have to worry about any of our records falling into the wrong hands. Our total garbage output to the dumpster in the alley is about four (or less) China-Mart shopping bags full. County says it is only a matter of time before dumpsters are eliminated and back to curbside pickup, weighing your trash as they pick it up. We're out in the middle of nowhere and our landfill is rapidly reaching its limit. Normally, when that happens the government eminently-domains someone's property and they make a brand spanking new landfill. Impossible here because all the land outside of the city belongs to the Northern Arapahoe and Eastern Shoshone nations.

Have You Bought Your Silver This Month?
Today a metals security analyst said that silver will balloon to $50 an ounce - as goes gold, silver follows. Part of our monthly budget, come hell or high water, is to purchase US silver eagles - a set amount every month. About every 6 months I purchase small-denomination, pre-1964 silver coins, dimes, quarters, halves. You don't want to pay a full ounce for a loaf of bread in a disaster economy when it could have been bought with a dime or quarter.

Today has been a good day! I purchased the mobile ham radio, six 55 gallon food grade drums with the reusable clip seal lids, and the much sought after singer treadle sewing machine in a bright yellow cabinet compliments of someone's gramma but it works great and has all the parts/supplies/spare belt and pliers with it. I consider this a home run Friday because I crossed 3 items off my list very inexpensively. The ham was $70, the six drums were $10 each, and the treadle singer was $20! I have reserved additional barrels for when they get their next batch of chocolate fudge in and have requested that they leave a bit in one of them.

We had a few days of nice weather last week so I was able to get out and increase the size of my garden beds. Something I wanted to do last year but didn’t get to it in time for the growing season. I have also been resurrecting an old Mantis garden tiller. This thing has not run in at least 15 years. I had to chip out the globs of fuel from the gas tank and then I put some gas in it and let it sit for several days until it cleaned out the rest of the debris. I took the carburetor apart and let soak in carboator cleaner for a day then blew it out with compressed air and replaced a few parts. It starts but still needs a little work. We just got 18 inches of snow last Monday so it will have to wait a while.
I have also been working on my B.O.B. I am using an Alice Pack and a medium size black canvas duffel bag for this project. For water purification I use a SteriPen.
