BIOCHAR (rebranded charcoal)

Has anyone looked into or heard of biochar for crops? People are making their own charchoal ( http://www.hedon.info/BP14:BiocharFuelsAndStoves ) and adding it to their soil ( http://www.economist.com/sciencetechnol ... d=14302001 ). There are many raves on the effects on crops by people whose knowledge of chemistry, plant growth and such dwarfs mine (not say much). Growing your own charcoal, in quantity, looks like a worth while project.
