9-1-09. Finished the CCW permit process, got my card and became legal.

Tomorrow I plan to change the locks and add dead bolts to the doors. My teenage daughter has been parading some fellow youth of questionable character through our house... I dont much care for that... she understands now and wont be bringing any more over. But, I think I would feel better with the addition of a dead bolt.

Thanks to the Good Lord and our garden, the canning and freezing are well underway. We will eat wll this winter. We are in the process of getting this year's fire wood under cover for the winter. Enough people are concerned about where our economy is going that I was able to teach a class on canning and freezing at my church this summer. Some of these people thought it was too much trouble last year. This will be an interesting year to watch.

Yesterday, missus and I canned 40 quarts of Yukon Gold potatoes from our garden, a dehydrator full of zucchini slices, and now have ten trays of cayenne and jalapeno peppers drying.

I finally received my order from model 1 sales (that I placed on February 1st) for my AR-15 upper and lower parts kit. So I will be putting together a new AR this week. The total cost to build (w/ my new stripped lower) is $665.00. Pretty cheap with all things considered. This one will be used as a beater for my truck, just in case. We also got to stock up on applesauce, my local grocery store had a sale ten for $10.00. They expire in 11/2011.

Were able to pick up a case of 48 cans of Bumblebee tuna at 2 for a buck at our local Smith's.

We held our monthly 'Prep Day' yesterday (2 weeks late) and learned a few lessons. We use it to straighten, rotate, and visually check canned food in our pantry. Maybe this can benefit you! I happened to notice some round circular stains (the shape of a can on the shelf under our supply of carrots. We pulled all the cans off and visually checked each and found seven cans that were leaking; call it bad seals, whatever. Seven cans at about .88 a can - you get the picture. Even though they were arranged properly and we strictly rotate, that does not guarantee that something won't go bad. On the other hand, we have some canned green chile with pork that is 11 years old and is perfectly good. Get in the habit of visually checking your stores - it may save you some heartache (sickness). Over the years, yes, we have lost some canned food but 9 times out of 10 it was food canned overseas. These were carrots from China Mart and Wally does not, generally, print on the can where something came from. I think maybe now that new production has to have 'country of origin'. WIFE AND I TRUST OUR HOME-CANNED FOODS ABOVE ALL ELSE.

I do not remember that happening to us, ever. What few supplies we have bought have come from the canneries in the central valley of Kowleefornia so it is almost local. The canneries in the U.S. have better quality control and health codes and human waste is not allowed as fertilizer like it is in cheena. I agree that the best food is what you grow and can yourself.

I had the same thing happen several years ago. Mine too were carrots and the other was tomato paste. There were black rings under both cans and when I opened the tomato paste with a can opener it squirted about a foot into the air. I threw out 8 cans total. They were bought at Grocery Outlet and they do have canned goods from other countries, that was the last time I bought any foreign canned goods. I know tomato paste is acidic but I don’t understand the carrots. That was the last and only time I have had that happen. I always look at rims and lids of cans now.
