How To Wash Produce Properly

Post by Watchman »

Here is a good article from Mother. From past experience overseas I am a hard nut to crack on some things. It may be classified as a poison to some, but we have ALWAYS put one or two drops of bleach in our wash water. The veterinary food service office on base said we had to do it because some of the Italian and Puerto Rican farmers used human feces as fertilizer. We've never forgot that lesson and have never been sick. Also, Mother's comment about rinses not doing any good I might dispute also. We add lemon juice and plain old baking soda to the wash water and it tends to loosen caked on dirt. We generally wash all vegetables and fruits at once. First the wash water with a soft wash cloth on each and every vegetable or fruit. Then into the rinse water for a few moments of swishing around. Then onto the towel on the counter to air dry. Leafy stuff we wash as we need it.
