Sig model 556
The Sig model 556 has been available in the U.S. for several years now. It is manufactured in Switzerland by the Sig Sauer Gun Co. This is one of the finest 5.56MM "black guns" ever made and the U.S. version is made to accept M-16 magazines. These rifles were adopted by the Swiss Army in 1986. They are gas operated, magazine fed, assault rifles, with a one in 7" barrel twist and a rotating bolt lock up system. This rifle uses a gas piston instead of direct gas impingement like the M-16 rifle. This allows them to shoot continuously without overheating. They are not sold or allowed in Massachusetts or Kalifornia. Google "Sig 556 rifles" to see pictures and specifications. They are EXPENSIVE at around $2200 dollars. I want one!!

I think one of the 'flaws' in this platform is that they stayed with the 5.56 - there are rounds out there that run circles around any 5.56 platform but as so often... we stick with what we know. Check out some of the 6.8 and 6.5 rounds... those are impressive. JMO
