Dec 2009 Personal Preps
Dec 2009 Personal Preps
This is where you list what you have just accomplished (in the current month). Today is our monthly prep day - we're going to be rearranging things in our storehouse. Will be moving some things to a non-secure area (those that are not critical).

A Close Encounter of the Bear Kind
Last week I bought permits at the USFS office for firewood harvesting. Each family can buy ten permits a year. My grandson Tim volunteered to go to the Bridger-Teton National Forest to get one of the cords. He came back yesterday with a half cord of wood and said that his work was cut short by the presence of a grizzly about 150 yards away. This late in the season bears are looking for "sustinance" to last them through hibernation and Tim hightailed it back home. All he had for protection was a 12-guage and for it to even hurt the grizz, he would have to be real close. I made up my mind that I'm going to buy him a .45 to carry while he is out and about the forest. Wolves are everywhere (thanks to New York City, cocktail-swigging tree huggers). This goes to prove that no matter your undertaking, PREPARE!

Re: Dec 2009 Personal Preps
In a continuation of the prior post, yesterday my grandson and I bought a 5x14-foot Big Tex trailer with ramp, for use by him to harvest firewood and to haul equipment. It will also double as a bug-out vehicle to load stuff for hauling out of civilization.

Re: Dec 2009 Personal Preps
A friend of mine who used to do some 'horse trading' with some of the local native Americans told me one time to 'stock up on cans of coffee. It is like money and people will barter big time for it.' Used to be we could buy a large can of ground coffee for $3.99 at our local Smith's. Ain't happening no more. The lowest prices is 4.99 so we went and bought 12 extra cans just for the eventuality. I've used 9-year old coffee from a can and it did not suffer from storage. Speaking of storage, the temperature in our pantry in our cellar is around 38 degrees. Almost ideal.
