Chuck Mawhinney
Viet Nam war sniper Chuck Mawhinney passed away on Feb 12 at 75 years old. He had the most confirmed kills of any sniper in that war. I met him a few years ago while participating in the Idaho State Sniper Championship at Blacks Creek Rifle Range near Boise. Chuck was the guest of honor and did the ...

Last night I finished book 3 of this series. Good books, I felt like I knew the characters and didn't want the books/storyline to end.

Cataract surgery
In the summer of 2021, I noticed that I could no longer see the sights on my pistol, could not get a proper sight picture or sight alignment and had a lot of misses while participating in a local defensive pistol shoot. Went to the eye doctor at the VA hospital for an eye examination and the doctor ...

Re: Don't Overlook Your Kindling Supply!!!!!
I have 18 five-gallon buckets stuffed full of dry kindling. Without it, making a fire becomes very hard during the winter when everything is wet and hard to light. Also keep several boxes of a fire-starting material called "Firelight Timber Starter" which is a mixture of sawdust and wax an...

Re: After-The-Gun-Show Report - Fremont County WY
Yesterday I went to a local gun show in Roseburg Oregon to see how many firearms were actually being sold. Did not see a single transaction due in part to the passage of new legislation (114) which was supposedly voted in by the people of Oregon last November. The background checks are taking anywhe...

Re: How Long Does Gas Last in a Can?
In the last several months I have used 35 gallons of gas which I have stored since 2017. This fuel was for use in my generators when the power goes down, but I never used it. Long term storage was aided by adding STABIL. I have found no problems with using this gas after 5 1/2 years in 5-gallon Gerr...

Re: Is It Time To Ditch Your Old Gas Lawnmower? (& All Your Other Gas Tools)
In California they have outlawed the sale of all gas powered equipment, chainsaws, lawnmowers, generators, weed wackers etc. Brilliant move. They make a battery powered chainsaw but they are junk with no power and can only be used to branch trees. With no generators available for winter power, they ...

Dreaming
Last night I had a dream. I was young again and living in Florida during the great construction boom of the early 1970s, making good money and having not a worry in the world. I was hanging out with good friends and having a great time, was tan and fit and as strong as a horse. This dream was so viv...

Re: How Much Wood Do I Need To Heat My House? (Another View)
Yup, I use about 5 cords depending on how cold it gets. Thats 5 cords of hardwoods like madrone or hickory. If you use fir it takes about 6 cords. Fir burns a tad hotter but has no duration and requires stoking the stove more often. Madrone will burn all night and is easy to restart the fire when yo...

The great heat dome of 2021
Scorching temperatures have ruined the commercial fruit growers harvest this year in the Pacific Northwest. One quarter of the cherry harvest in Washington State has been destroyed by never seen before heat. The fruit was cooked right on the trees. Here in Oregon my backyard red raspberry crop was d...

June 10th. 2021 and its 39 degrees. Have had a fire burning in the wood stove for the last week trying to keep warm. Very unusual weather. Mother of all component shortages.
Since the election on Nov 3 there has been a shortage of reloading components, like none anywhere in the country. Primers and powder are a thing of the past. Projectiles are hit and miss. Store shelves are empty. In the Sportsman's Warehouse in Roseburg Oregon they have removed the shelves that once...

Re: Low Tech experiment to improve fruit harvest
Apricots seem to be a hit or miss proposition. I have several semi dwarf trees that seem to be susceptible to late spring frosts or rain that washes off the pollen from the flowers. They are Cascade and Puget Gold varieties which were developed for this climate here on the western slope of the Casca...

New 165 grain bullets for 9MM
The Xtreme Bullet Company has introduced a heavy weight 165 grain projectile for the 9MM. I bought a box of 500 to experiment with. Started out with 3 grains of Tite Group Powder and shot some rounds through the chronograph. Average velocity was 785 feet per second with very mild recoil but these ro...

Check, have all that and then some. Could probably build another house with all the materials I have on hand, plus cement mixers, drywall tools, 50 pound boxes of nails, fire starter materials, chainsaws with spare chains and lots of gasoline. Another handy tool is the Alaskan saw mill for making di...

It has become evident that the greatest chance for disaster will come from mother nature rather than war or rogue government. In the east and Midwest the flood threat is always there and in the arid west we have earthquakes and the summer wild fire season. Currently we have a forest fire burning ove...

Have plenty of booze for barter but people who imbibe are fewer than what use to be. Now that a younger generation has become of age they are smoking pot rather than drink. Pot has been legalized here in Oregon along with small amounts of meth and heroin. We have a governor who is a complete nut job...

I received an email from AIM SURPLUS stating that they had received a shipment of police department trade in Star 9MM pistols. Re: Natural Weed Killer - THIS WORKS!
I must try this weed killing formula. The weeds have taken over my garden. I spend one hour per day on my knees pulling them out of the raised beds where my veggies are growing. I have a small mountain of weeds rotting in the sun but the weeds outside those raised beds are almost waist high. Due to ...

Re: A Question About Buying Gold and Silver
For me I would choose option number one. This way there will not be any future early morning knock on the door from FINCEN agents to confiscate those coins. Possession of gold by private citizens has already been banned once in this country in 1933 when FDR outlawed it. Silver coins have never been ...
